What is a neighbour dispute?

A neighbour dispute is any disagreement between neighbours which can be stressful and challenging.

What are the common causes for neighbour disputes?

Noise – Some noises are unavoidable; however, they can become unbearable if it is an ongoing problem. Noise complaints can vary from loud excessive music to dogs barking. You can learn more about nuisances here.

Trees and hedges – Neighbour disputes are sometimes caused by overhanging trees and tall hedges. You can attempt to resolve these issues yourself by asking the tree owner to trim back the tree if it is not done you can trim back the tree to the boundary line. If you want to do this, you should notify your neighbour and return or dispose of the trimmings with their permission.

Boundaries, fences and driveways – A dispute about the boundaries between neighbours’ properties can arise due to the maintenance of a fence or if there is a shared driveway. To learn more about boundary disputes visit our boundary disputes.

What can you do if you have a neighbour dispute?

The best advice we can offer is to approach your neighbour calmly and explain the source of distress. If are unable to reach a solution, assistance may be available from your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Sometimes, however, issues may arise in relation to damage caused to your property or to the boundary or shared boundary structures (such as fences or walls). Again, we would hope that it would be possible to resolve these disputes by direct discussion and negotiation but, in more serious cases, it may be necessary to involve solicitors and, potentially, your insurers
