What is harassment?
Harassment is when you experience unwanted behaviour and find it offensive, intimidating or humiliating. It can occur on its own or alongside other forms of discrimination.
Are you being harassed?
It is important to remember that harassment is a criminal offence and can lead to imprisonment and/or a fine. Being harassed can cause you an enormous amount of distress, anxiety and in some cases, ill health. It can occur in a variety of forms such as:
- A person repeatedly taking photographs of you
- Waiting outside or near your home
- Unwanted phone calls, emails, or letters
- Stalking
- Bullying or abuse online
- Verbal abuse or threats
What action can you take if you’re being harassed?
It is important to emphasise if you feel that you are in danger, to contact the police immediately.
You can act under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. If you’re being harassed the person(s) can be prosecuted in the criminal courts. acting under the Protection Act 1997 also means you can act against the individual in the civil courts to prevent them from harassing you again in the future.
