While same-sex couples can legally marry, they also have the option to enter a civil partnership. This offers legal and financial protections similar.

What are the differences between civil partnerships and marriage?

There are no significant differences between civil partnerships and marriage in terms of committing to spend your life with your partner. However, there are some legal differences such as:

  • Civil partners are unable to call themselves married
  • Civil partnership certificates include both parties’ parents. Whereas marriage certificates include the parties’ fathers names only.
  • Unlike marriage, adultery cannot be a reason to dissolve a civil partnership.
  • Civil partnerships are available to same-sex couples and differ from civil marriages.
